Red Cross Honors Area Volunteers for Services

By ERIK LINCOLN, The Daily Sentinel, Monday, October 02, 2006

Four Western Slope residents received the Chuck Kornman Award for Volunteer Service from the western Colorado chapter of the American Red Cross last week.

The award is named after long-time Red Cross volunteer and local Grand Junction resident Chuck Kornman.

The award recognizes outstanding service over the past year from the Red Cross' Western Colorado chapter volunteers.

Kim Giannone, Dan and Marty Thompson and Kerry Wirth received the awards at the chapter's annual meeting and volunteer awards ceremony, according to the Red Cross.

Giannone, of Grand Junction, served on the chapter's board for six years before resigning Thursday.

The Thompsons have volunteered with the Red Cross for many years and were noted for their service after Sept. 11.

Wirth teaches health and safety classes in Carbondale. She also teaches courses for health and safety instructors.

"Kerry is an excellent instructor," Kornman said. "Her students know their stuff when she is done with them. Instructor candidates turn into great instructors because she has been the trainer."

Other volunteers recognized were: Judy and John Miller, Mickey and John Neal, Ken Topliss, Carol Bonnet-Butler, Don George, Jim Malapanas, Peggy Radick, Nettie Reynolds, Steve Schroder, Jane Smith, Peggy Cherry, Maggie Namish, Nancy Kille, Marc Wendland, Ryan Edwards, Dori Kimminau, Phil Piotrowski, Brian Davis, Joe Adragna, Crystal Corey, Sheryl Gallegos, Harry Mavrakis, Ben Morris, Debbie Schultz, Jeff Wells, Jeff Wendland and Rob Zentner.
