Western Colorado, March 7, 2006 7:00 p.m. American Red Cross volunteers responded to an apartment fire in Rifle earlier this evening and are assisting 4 - 5 families temporarily displaced by that fire.
Jean Hermanson, Executive Director, American Red Cross, Western Colorado Chapter stated "volunteers were called out by emergency services personnel at approximately 4:30 p.m. to help residents who's homes were destroyed." Jean indicated that long time Red Cross volunteer Mike Alsdorf was at the scene to provide initial disaster assessment and orchestrate Red Cross response.
Jean further stated "my initial information is that 4 - 5 families were displaced as a result of the fire. They are being provided emergency housing (motels) for the next few days. Volunteers remain on the scene and will be meeting with residents either tonight or tomorrow to determine their shelter, food and clothing needs."
